Christopher Duntsch, born on April 3, 1971, is a former American neurosurgeon nicknamed Dr. D. and Dr. Death for gross malpractice. The series takes some liberties with its source material for dramatic purposes and changes some names to protect real identities.

Christopher Duntsch, the former neurosurgeon who inspired the series “Dr. Death,” is currently serving a life sentence in a Texas prison, according to Oprah daily. He was found guilty of maiming and killing many of his patients between 2011 and 2013 and was responsible for the death of at least two patients.
Duntsch’s medical license was revoked in 2013, and he was formally arrested in 2015 for six felony counts of aggravated assault, one count of injury to an elderly person, and five counts of aggravated assault causing severe bodily injury.
