Gurpreet Singh Sandhu Career
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is a trailblazer in Indian football. Taking up the sport at a young age, he joined St Stephen’s Academy in Chandigarh and worked his way into the Punjab state youth teams. In 2009, he joined East Bengal, signed his first professional contract, and made his senior debut soon after.
He debuted his senior national team in India’s 1-1 draw with Turkmenistan during the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualification rounds. Gurpreet got his first taste of continental championships with East Bengal, playing in the 2012 AFC Cup. With an aim to play competitive football in Europe, he signed for the Norwegian top-division club Stabæk on 15 August 2014.
After playing in friendlies and cup matches, he ultimately debuted in the Norwegian Tippeligaen in May 2016 to become the first Indian footballer in a European top-division league. A month later, he started for Stabæk in a UEFA Europa League first qualifying match to become the first Indian footballer to play in a European continental competition.
He returned to professional football in India by signing for Bengaluru FC in August 2017. He won the league with Bengaluru FC in 2018-19 and also won the individual honour of the Golden Glove award as best goalkeeper by keeping the most number of clean sheets that season. He also won the Super Cup with Bengaluru.
In 2019, he was given the Arjuna Award, the highest honour given to a sportsperson by the Indian government. He was also given the league’s Golden Glove Award in the 2019-20 season.
