Vijayakanth, an actor and the head of DMDK died Thursday at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 71 years old. His party said that he was on a ventilator after testing positive for Covid-19. The hospital did say, though, that he had asthma.
Who is Vijayakanth?
Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami, who went by the stage name Vijayakanth, was an Indian politician and actor who mainly worked in Tamil movies. He was born in Madurai on August 25, 1952, and had a great career as an actor, producer, and director before he ran for office.
From 2011 to 2016, Vijayakanth was the Opposition leader in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He also started the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) political party and was its head.

Vijayakanth, an Indian actor and politician, died in Chennai on December 28, 2023, at 71. He had been sick with asthma and had other health problems.
The Hindustan Times states that he was recently found to have COVID-9 and was taken to Chennai’s MIOT International Hospital, where he was being ventilated because he had asthma. Even though the medical staff did everything they could, he died of the illness.
Vijayakanth is survived by his wife, Premalatha, and two sons. His wife is the treasurer of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) political party, which was founded by Vijayakanth.
